Be Prepared
In the event of a disaster could you make it on your own for several days? It's important to have an emergency plan before a disaster strikes:
- Make a plan
- Have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts
- Discuss your emergency plan with your friends, family, and neighbors
Build a Kit
In addition to having your basic survival supplies, an emergency kit should have items to meet your individual needs in various emergencies. Consider the items you use every day and which ones you may need to add to your kit. Additional items to consider include:
- Weather radio (with text display and a flashing alert)
- Extra hearing-aid batteriesPen and paper (in case you have to communicate with someone who does not know sign language)
- Battery operated lantern to enable communication by sign language or lip reading, especially when the electricity is out and it’s dark
Emergency Safety
During an emergency, it's important to listen to local officials. Plan ahead of time, so you will know where go if you are instructed to evacuate. During high winds or a tornado, take shelter in a storm shelter or interior room with now windows. Prepare an emergency kit ahead of time with enough supplies to last at least three days. Consider the unique needs of your family when building your kit. When using a generator, make sure it is outside at least 20 feet away from your home to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. If you come across a flooded road or walkway, always remember turn around don't drown!
