Walton Ferry Road (Old Shackle Island Road)

Map of Project Limits
Map of Project Limits

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is constructing a project on Walton Ferry Road/Old Shackle Island Road from Nokes Drive to Volunteer Drive. The project includes reconstruction, realignment, and widening for approximately one mile. The proposed improvements are intended to address congestion, improve safety, and accommodate growth in this rapidly developing area.

The existing Walton Ferry roadway is primarily two lanes, and the existing Old Shackle roadway is primarily 3 lanes. The project will widen the existing Walton Ferry roadway to a three-lane alignment, including one 12-foot travel lane in each direction, a 12-foot dedicated center turn lane, 4-foot paved shoulders that will be striped for bike lanes, curb and gutter, and five-foot sidewalks on each side.

At the intersection with State Route 6 (US 31E), Walton Ferry Road and Old Shackle Island Road will both be widened to include one 12-foot travel lane, two 12-foot left turn lanes, one 12-foot right turn lane, 4-foot paved shoulders that will be striped for bike lanes, curb and gutter, and five-foot sidewalks on each side. The project will replace the existing offset intersection with a traditional 4-leg intersection with signals.

Current Status: Construction is underway.

Construction Start: February 2025

Estimated completion*: May 2027

Funding Type: State and Federal

Traffic Impacts

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction for the duration of the project with intermittent lane closures expected. Old Shackle Island Road will be closed for a period of time while work around the CSX railroad is performed.

• Temporary lane closures on SR 6 (W. Main St.) will be allowed from 8 p.m. - 5 a.m.
• Temporary lane closures on Walton Ferry Rd. and Old Shackle Island Rd. will be allowed from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
• Temporary closures and flagging operations may be needed on side streets to complete construction during some traffic phases.

The timeline for these closures is still being determined. Please note CSX closures may fall outside this scope.

History and Background

This area of Sumner County has experienced rapid growth in recent years and the current intersection does not adequately accommodate the existing volumes. The route has a base year 2024 average daily traffic of 12,900 vehicles per day and a design year 2044 average daily traffic of 16,510 vehicles per day. The realignment is necessary to add capacity to maintain operations at an acceptable level of service and increase safety for all users of this corridor.
