Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA)

On Saturday, November 19, 1994, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was internationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). TBI received reaccreditation in 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2023.

CALEA is the nonprofit organization that accredits law enforcement agencies internationally. Standards are developed to help law enforcement agencies achieve the following: increase agency capabilities to prevent and control crime, enhance agency effectiveness and efficiency in the delivery of law enforcement services, improve cooperation and coordination with other law enforcement agencies and other components of the criminal justice system, increase citizen and staff confidence in the goals, objectives, policies and practices of the agency. Participation in the accreditation program is voluntary.

Tennessee Law Enforcement Accreditation

TBI received accreditation from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Accreditation Program in 2016, 2020, and 2024. 

The program was created under the direction and authority of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police, which supports and endorses the continued improvement of law enforcement and emergency communications services by establishing professional standards of accountability, management, and operations.


ANAB (ANSI-National Accreditation Board)

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services Division operates out of laboratories in each of the three Grand Regions of Tennessee: Upper East (Knoxville), Middle (Nashville) and West (Jackson). The Laboratory System obtained accreditation in forensic testing services in 1994 thru the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB). In November of 2014 the Laboratory System was awarded International accreditation status after successful assessment under the ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standards for testing laboratories thru ASCLD/LAB. Accreditation was extended to cover Breath Alcohol Calibration activities and crime scene processing following the 2014 assessment. In 2018, the Laboratory System accreditation was transferred to ANAB (ANSI-National Accreditation Board).

ANAB, operated by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), is the largest multi-disciplinary accreditation body in North America.

Under ANAB accreditation, the TBI's Forensic Services Division will continue to offer the highest quality forensic testing and calibration services obtainable and meet customer needs through sound management system practices.
