The mission of the Internal Audit Office is to provide independent, objective assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve the Bureau’s operations. 

A strong commitment to internal auditing helps the TBI accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.

TBI has been internationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since November 19, 1994. The Accreditation Manager is responsible for ensuring the Bureau maintains compliance with CALEA accreditation standards. The Bureau was successfully reaccredited in 1997, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, and 2019.

In addition to CALEA accreditation, TBI received accreditation from the Tennessee Law Enforcement Accreditation program in 2016 and 2020.

The Public Information Office is the central point of communication between TBI and the public. The staff in this office act as the point of contact for the media and promote some of the TBI’s most high-profile cases and programs.

Website development, video production, special promotional efforts, and the production of all outside promotional materials related to the Bureau are produced by this office.

The Professional Standards Unit oversees all legal, procedural, and legislative issues related to the Bureau. The staff of attorneys ensures that TBI policy, decisions, and contracts are legally sound, as well as acting as a liaison to the Tennessee General Assembly.

TBI operates a Cessna 182 Sylane and a Pilatus PC-12NG aircraft, as necessary, in support of TBI investigations and the needs of other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The Bureau's aircraft can be used for surveillance, intelligence-gathering, and the transport of critical personnel in support of law enforcement operations.

TBI's Aviation Unit consists of an Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC), who serves as a full-time pilot, three additional full-time flight crew members, and two contract pilots. The ASAC reports directly to TBI's Deputy Director.

TBI's Executive Officer serves on the Bureau's senior management team and handles projects related to the expansion and enhancement of the Bureau. Other duties include policy assessment, managing reponses to employee suggestions and overseeing supplemental services and projects.

The TBI's Human Resources Unit provides guidance and strategies to align TBI's personnel, processes, and organizational structure to the Bureau's mission. Employees in this unit provide a full range of human resources support, to include classification/compensation, performance management, employee relations, and affirmative action. This unit also provides technical support for the processing of payroll, leave and attendance, benefits, workers’ compensation, and a variety of employee transactions. Staff also conduct onboarding for new employees and ensure compliance with required state and federal employment laws, to include the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Amended Act (ADA), and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The TBI's Human Resources Unit also oversees TBI's Chaplain Program, which is a volunteer, non-sworn position to support the mission of the TBI in providing a source of strength to law enforcement officers and their families, other department members, and the community.  The program supports employees in the handling of crisis situations, comforts victims and their families when accidents occur and criminal incidents are committed, and provides counseling and other ministerial functions that may be needed.

TBI's Protective Services Unit consists primarily of Uniformed Officers who are responsible for the phyical security of TBI facilities, along with TBI personnel and guests. Employees in this unit also conduct  all background investigations for full-time and temporary employees, interns, contract personnel, certain Tennessee Education Lottery employees, and all appointments by the Governor.

Employees in this unit also handle investigations of alleged misconduct by TBI employees.

TBI's Fiscal Services Unit has a wide range of responsibilities, designed to ensure each division has the resources and support necessary to thrive.

Employees in this unit prepare the Bureau's annual budget, monitor expenditures and revenue collection, process accounts receivable and payable transactions, maintain all federal and interdepartmental grants, review the fiscal effect of proposed legislation to the Burau, and serve as a liaison to the Tennessee General Assembly and other state and federal accounting units.

Employees in this unit handle a variety of key support functions, including the purchasing of all goods and services necessary for TBI to operate effectively. This unit also manages all TBI vehicles and transportation equipment and conducts an annual inventory of all TBI state-tagged equipment.
