The State Board of Education is charged in law with setting and approving all academic standards at least every eight years in a thorough and open process. To date, Tennessee’s academic standards review process has received over 620,300 reviews and comments from Tennesseans — including parents, teachers, education leaders, and other citizens — and serves as one of the most transparent standards review processes in the country.
The Board's academic standards review is the first step to ultimately implementing revised standards in classrooms. Our standards review process
begins with feedback and comments from Tennesseans over two survey periods. Before the standards are approved by the State Board, public comments are considered by expert educator advisory teams. Then, the Standards Recommendation Committee will conduct a thorough review of the changes recommended by educator advisory teams.
The initial public survey for the social studies standards review was open from June 20 to July 18, 2022. Educators, parents, and community
members were invited to share their thoughts and feedback on the current social studies standards. During this initial review period, the State Board of Education collected 114,500 comments from Tennesseans. Feedback from this initial public review period informed the work of expert educator advisory teams that proposed revisions to the social studies standard. The Standards Development Committee, comprised of select members from the educator advisory teams, met October 12-14, 2022 to review all work completed by the educator advisory teams and ensure vertical alignment across all subjects and grade levels. The Standards Development Committee met the week of November 7, 2022 to finalize its work.
The second round of soliciting public feedback was open from February 27, 2023 - March 26, 2023. Tennesseans were invited during this process to share their comments on the proposed revisions to the social studies academic standards. The State Board of Education collected 80, 800 comments from Tennesseans.
On July 25, 2023 the Standards Recommendation Committee (SRC), comprised of individuals appointed by the Governor or the speakers of the Tennessee General Assembly and subject to legislative confirmation, reviewed data from the second round of the public feedback survey and elected a Chair and Vice-Chair. On August 15, 2023 the Standards Recommendation Committee, set the agenda for in-person work of reviewing the
social studies standards. The Standards Recommendation Committee Work Sessions will take place August 28-31, 2023. The revised standards will
go to the State Board of Education for approval in February 2024.
