Follow these steps to reinstate your driving privileges:
If your license has been suspended, it is possible to get it reinstated. Reinstatement requirements vary depending on the type of suspension and the circumstances of the conviction(s). Multiple offenses can also impact your requirement requirements and what you need to pay.
Reinstatement and requirement information is included in the letter(s) you received from the Department of Safety & Homeland Security or can be found online.
Depending on the reason for the suspension, you may have to complete one or more of these steps:
- Serve Mandatory Suspension Period (if applicable)
- Satisfy Any Court Ordered Requirements (if applicable)
- Retake Driver’s Examination Test (if over 1 renewal cycle from expiration date)
- Install Ignition Interlock Device on Vehicle (any DUI after 07/01/2016)
- Provide the following:
- Proof of Liability Insurance (if applicable)
- Court Certification (if applicable)
- Defensive Driving Course Certificate (if applicable)
- Submit proof that the citation has been satisfied (if applicable)
- SR-22 Insurance (if applicable)
- Surrender Your Tennessee Driver License (if applicable)
- Pay Reinstatement fees
The Department of Safety and Homeland Security provides a variety of convenient ways to reinstate your driving privileges: online, in person at driver service centers across the state, or by mail.
Note: Please have the following information handy when calling in to our toll- free call center:

2. Date of Birth
3. Driver’s License Number
4. Social Security Number
If your driver's license has been lost, stolen or destroyed, you may be eligible to obtain a replacement online.
Obtaining a replacement license does not change the expiration date of the original issued license.

- You may also obtain a replacement by applying in person at any driver services center.
If your lost license will expire within the next 12 months, you may choose to renew the license rather than just get a duplicate except for temporary licenses.
If your license is set to expire in less than six (6) months, you must renew your license.
Fees for a replacement license:
- First duplicate = $8 dollars
- Subsequent duplicates = $12 dollars
- Duplicates for a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) = $12 dollars (extra cost applies if you have enhancements)
- Subsequent CDL duplicates = $16 dollars

You, or any person authorized by you, may obtain a copy of your driver record (also called a motor vehicle record, or MVR) online, by mail or in person at any of our Driver Services Centers.
A driver record (MVR) contains your driving history. The MVR also shows current and resolved court-ordered suspensions, citations, violations and other entries impacting your record.
The most convenient way to obtain a MVR is online.
- Cost: $5.00 - credit/check card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover)
- You cannot use a prepaid card
- Requires: Driver name, Date of Birth, TN Driver License Number, Social Security Number
- You will need a computer to print or save your MVR

- You will need the following when requesting your record:
1. Full Name
2. Date of Birth
3. TN Driver License Number
If you want someone else to obtain a copy of your MVR for you, you must submit a notarized statement authorizing that person to obtain the record.

Reinstatement information is available 24 hours a day via the department's automated phone system.
To obtain reinstatement requirements via the automated phone system, a Tennessee driver license number is required.
