Disability Services
Purpose Statement
The Office of Disability Services is committed to meeting the needs of TRC students through a program of direct and support services. Services provided help to ensure equal access to academics and other campus services by working to identify and provide needed special accommodations in relation to student training programs, personal development activities, and employment recommendations, as well as through the provision of essential courses. The Disability Services team coordinates services and assists as an advocate and liaison for students who have special disability accommodation needs. Disability-related learning opportunities are also provided for staff and students.
Support / Enhancement Services provided include the following:
- Accommodation Services, including assessments, determinations, and Assistive Technology and Equipment recommendations for TRC students, as needed
- Assistive Technology / Equipment Loans for TRC students, if equipment is available
- Educational opportunities on disability-related topics for staff, students, and other internal and external stakeholders
Direct Services
- Pre-Intake Assessments for VR clients planning to attend TRC
- Evaluations and pre-training for VR clients planning to attend the Tennessee Business Enterprises program for blind vendors
- Disability Services enhancement courses (See detailed course list below.)
Deaf Services
Individuals who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind will receive individualized services for possible accommodations that may consist of sign language Interpreters, communication technology, and other support services to create a “deaf-friendly” environment. Basic American Sign Language and Deaf Culture are taught to the staff and students to provide good communication and understanding of those within the Deaf Community.
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center offers services to assist individuals who have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Some behaviors associated with this disorder include complications with social and communication skills, and at times, difficulty with day to day functioning – whether at school, work, or interpersonally. Because of the special and specific needs of each individual, individualized, autism-specific services are identified on a student’s Individual Needs Assessment (INA). Some of the services provided include Individual services, Observational Assessments; Speech-Language evaluations and therapy; Social Skills Training and Group Therapy.
