Ongoing Projects
Copper Basin Mining District (Copperhill, TN)
The Copper Basin Mining District site is located in southeast Polk County between Ducktown and Copperhill, Tennessee. The site includes parts of the North Potato Creek and Davis Mill watersheds, and a 26-mile stretch of the Ocoee River that was affected by historic mining activities at the site. Mining, processing, chemical manufacturing, and waste disposal at the site began in the late 1800s. Mining ended in 1987 and chemical production ended in 2000. The historic mining and processing at the site caused erosion and the transportation of tens of millions of cubic yards of soil and waste to the Ocoee River and also left the land totally barren. Since the late 1990s, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation has provided oversight of cleanup and restoration of the Copper Basin Mining District site. Proposed DOE Environmental Management Disposal Facility (Oak Ridge, TN)
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management (OREM) wants to build a new landfill to dispose of their radioactive, hazardous, and toxic wastes in Oak Ridge. They are running out of available space at their current landfill, the Environmental Management Waste Management Facility (EMWMF). DOE seeks approval for the new landfill under CERCLA regulations just like the EMWMF. DOE calls the proposed new landfill the “Environmental Management Disposal Facility” or “EMDF”.
ACC Landfill (Mt. Pleasant, TN)
The ACC Landfill Site is located on an approximately 48.02-acre parcel of land located on Arrow Mines Road south of the City of Mt. Pleasant in Maury County, Tennessee. The ACC Landfill is a closed Class II (industrial) solid waste disposal facility that was used for the disposal of aluminum recycling wastes from the Smelter Service Corporation. The disposed wastes consist of “salt cake” slag and bag-house dusts from Smelter Service’s aluminum smelting operations. Salt cake contains high concentrations of highly soluble salts sodium chloride and potassium chloride. More information on the ACC Landfill is available here
Former Monsanto Chemical Company (Maury County, TN)
The Monsanto Chemical Company site in Maury County is located approximately five miles northwest of downtown Columbia, Tennessee between the Duck River and Williamsport Highway (State Route 50). The past use of the site by the Monsanto Chemical Company resulted in the properties associated with the site to have issues related to contamination by hazardous substances. To protect human health and the environment, the properties are subject to land use restrictions. More information on the Former Monsanto Chemical Company
