Before & After School Activity

Before and after school activity, also called out-of-school time physical activity includes group, team, or individual physical activity outside of regular school hours and during school breaks. Out-of-School time programs can provide essential learning opportunities that reinforce what is learned in school and can play a vital role in helping children fulfill the 60+ minutes of daily recommended activity.

Grundy County Schools

Tracy City Elementary school has been named a Reward School based on progress. Tracy City Elementary implemented a before school physical activity program in January 2015. During this program, students are physically active in Zumba or other fitness activities.

Monroe County Schools

Monroe County Schools CSH takes great pride in our “Monroe in Motion” program. Currently Monroe in Motion is in 6 of our schools (Madisonville Primary, Madisonville Intermediate, Madisonville Middle, Tellico Plains Elementary, Tellico Plains High, and Vonore Elementary) and offers one after schools class. Monroe in Motion is structured physical fitness classes before and after school.

These classes are led by certified trainers paid by CSH. Classes range from Zumba to various physical fitness activities. Afternoon classes focus on nutrition education as well. We're able to provide these classes through our project diabetes grant and county ThreeStar grant. Our county is a poverty stricken county with our free/reduced lunch rate reaching as high as 78% at some schools.

Monroe in Motion offers our students a way to lead healthier lifestyle. Monroe in Motion serves over 350 people a week. Some of the successes that we’ve celebrated with this program are as follows: At Madisonville Intermediate School we have over 150 children participate in the morning. One student that suffers from autism has benefited greatly because of this program. At first, she was a reluctant to even make eye contact with me when I asked her if she wanted to participate. This student began to move in her seat. The moving led to standing in the bleachers. By the end of the year this student was on the gym floor participating. She is not only focused, but gaining in her self-esteem. By the end of the year this student joined the front row and participated with pride. One principal has had full student participation some mornings at his school. He's changed his testing day to a day his school has Monroe in Motion to see if his test scores improve.

Girls on the Run

  • GOTR is an evidence-based, afterschool program designed to allow girls to participate in a curriculum that includes emotional, social, mental and physical development through physical activity.  The program offers curriculum for 3rd through 5th graders as well as 6th through 8th graders.

Tennessee Department of Health Run Club Toolkit

  • The Tennessee Department of Health developed and provided this toolkit as a resource for those working with school-aged children in the state of Tennessee toward the establishment and expansion of run clubs.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation: Healthy Out of School Time 

  • This resource offers suggestions for indoor and outdoor activities, including football, four-square, volleyball, Up-Down-Stop-Go, All Tangled up, Capture the Flag, Three Lines Basketball, Run-a-thons, etc.  The website offers Games Library and Games Guide with over 1,000 games.

Quaker Get Active

  • The Be Healthy Afterschool Toolkit, developed by Quaker Chewy in collaboration with Afterschool Alliance, is a comprehensive toolkit that includes academic as well as physical activity suggestions. These suggestions include relay games and jump rope races.

CATCH Kids Club

  • CATCH Kids Club (CKC) is a physical activity and nutrition education program designed for elementary and middle school aged children (grades K – 8) in an after-school or summer setting. CKC is composed of nutrition education (including snack activities) and physical activity. The CKC program offers an easy-to-use format that both children and staff enjoy and is easy to implement

SPARK After School Curriculum

  • SPARK AS is designed to provide children and adolescents ages 5-14 with inclusive, highly active movement opportunities that foster social and motor development while maximizing time spent in MVPA (moderate to vigorous physical activity) and fitness pursuits.
